#1 and #3 early versions of the iconic ridged stem Friends. Ray Jardine worked to refine this design and changed they way we all protect ourselves on the rock. Initially, three sizes were offered. Vertical Archaeology is missing the #2 unit.
These units were sold through Jardine Enterprises. They are from late 1978 early 1979. Also, notice the large flat nut and threaded axle on both units.
I have included an interesting letter-to-the-editor of “Off Belay” magazine discussing a change in the effective camming angle on production Friends. The change was from a high of 25 degrees to what is very close to todays modern units at 15 degrees.
